Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal is the sequel to the OVA Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal, which was released in 2000 and served as a prequel to the original Rurouni Kenshin manga. It is the sequel to the Rurouni Kenshin television series, and it retells the story of Renshi Shigaraki's life following the end of the war and leading up to his confrontation with the Sanosuke and Seishiro families during the Tencho massacre.

Plot
The series is set in present day Tokyo and follows Renshi Shigaraki. Years after the conclusion of the Kenshin Saga, he is a man searching for revenge. Renshi is an orphan and is taken in by his uncle, who raises him as his own son. It is later revealed that his uncle's wife and daughter have since died in an accident. When the uncle dies, the family home is sold. In the meantime, he has gained the title of Shinigami (death god) and he has vowed to destroy Kenshin, the former head of the Shinzoku (Blood Stained). Renshi now lives in a poor neighborhood in Tokyo, and makes a living as a locksmith. He is good friends with a young boy, Son Goku, who often helps him in his locksmithing. He is still very lonely and longs to have his parents back, but this wish is granted when his uncle's former wife, Masako, appears and tells Renshi that they have recently been granted a trial in the next life. Masako also tells him that they have both been given an old mansion, and Renshi can live in it free of charge. Renshi agrees to move in.
When he is there, he notices a woman crying at the back of the house. She tells him her name is Momo, that she is a former Shinigami, and she has been cursed to live on Earth as a human for all of her life because of an unrequited love that happened many years ago.
